Speaker Information

Sandra Barrios has served as the Interpreter Coordinator for the Fourth Judicial District in Boise, supervisor for all court interpreters in Ada, Boise, Elmore and Valley counties, and has been a Regional District Spanish Interpreter since October 2003.  She is a Master Level Court-Certified Interpreter for the Spanish language and a member of the Idaho Supreme Court’s Court Interpreter Subcommittee.  She also serves as lead faculty for the court interpreter training and certification program.  In an effort to promote continuing education, Sandra has organized annual conferences for interpreters, edits a statewide newsletter designed to keep interpreters abreast of changes and improvements occurring in Idaho and nationwide, and presents to a variety of community groups about the role of interpreters.

 

Hélène Belanger received her master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Idaho State University and is a Licensed Professional Counselor.  She has experience providing counseling to children, adolescents and adults in both community and substance abuse treatment settings.  In addition, Hélène has gained expertise in working in the areas of Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Nurturing Parenting.  She is now employed by The Women’s and Children’s Alliance as a counselor.

 

Gayle Cooper is the Associate Director of the Fulcrum Institute Dispute Resolution Clinic.  Ms. Cooper received her Certified Mediation Designation in 1997 and has completed more than 1000 successful mediations. She serves as the co-instructor for the Clinic’s mediation Basic 40-Hour Interest Based Mediation Training curriculum.  She is a member of the Academy of Family Mediators, Idaho Mediation Association, Washington Mediation Association, and is the current Treasurer for Resolution Washington.  In addition to scheduling all classes, Ms. Cooper maintains the Clinic’s professional contacts with certifying corporations.

 

Layne Davis was admitted to the Idaho State Bar in 1994 after receiving his undergraduate degree in English from Boise State University and law degree from the University of Utah.  He has been in private practice since that time, exclusively in Ada County.  He has been a mediator for eight years in addition to his work in criminal defense and child welfare. 

 

Sherry Gorrell, CPM practices as a Collaboration Coach, Facilitator and Supreme Court Approved Mediator with Resolutions, Inc.  Since 1998 she has facilitated divorcing couples, families, employees/employers and work teams through the slippery slope of conflict … helping them see the possibilities while creating resolution and new beginnings. As a member of Collaborative Professionals of Idaho, she works as a facilitator/mediator team member with family attorneys, child specialists, and financial experts to holistically assist families through divorce.

 

Susan Hayman, Senior Associate at EnviroIssues, merges an in-depth understanding of science and natural resource management with years of facilitation, mediation, and strategic planning experience. She works extensively in collaborative decision-making and group conflict resolution, applying a strong set of interpersonal communication skills with humor and optimism. Susan is a member of the U.S. Institute for Environmental Conflict Resolution’s Roster of Practitioners, a national listing of highly qualified facilitators and mediators selected through a rigorous application and screening process. She also holds a Certificate in Public Participation through the International Association of Public Participation.

 

Jack Hebner is the Executive Director of the Fulcrum Institute Dispute Resolution Clinic located in Spokane, WA and Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.  Mr. Hebner has been a CPM within the Idaho Mediation Association since 1995.  He serves as the lead trainer for the Clinic’s mediation training classes, which include but are not limited to the Basic 40-Hour Interest Based Mediation Training and the 20-Hour Child Custody and Family Law Training curricula.  Mr. Hebner has performed more than 1000 mediations.  The Fulcrum Institute Dispute Resolution Clinic has been the Certified State Designated entity in Washington state since 1997.

 

Pierce Murphy, Boise’s first Community Ombudsman, was appointed by the Mayor and the City Council on March 2, 1999 and began work on April 5, 1999.  Mr. Murphy has extensive experience in human resource management, facilitation, mediation and investigation.  He earned a Master of Pastoral Studies degree from Loyola University of New Orleans, a Master of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce from Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, California.  Mr. Murphy began his career in 1972 as a law enforcement officer with the City of Menlo Park in California.  Following his graduate studies and from 1986 until 1994, he maintained an active Human Resource Management consulting practice, with clients throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and Latin America.  In 1994 Mr. Murphy joined the Paper Division of the Boise Cascade Corporation as Manager of Human Resource Development. 

 

Deborah Norum is founder of her own consulting firm and has 25 years experience developing organizational leadership and executive career potential, working with management change, providing career development and transition, and teaching at the graduate and undergraduate level.  She holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration and is an IMA Certified Professional Mediator (CPM) on the Idaho Supreme Court civil and child custody rosters.  Dr. Norum has additional training as an EEO Federal Sector Investigator and certification as a Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF).

 

Tito Rivera’s passion is working with various cultures.  A Spanish, English and Portuguese speaker, Tito Rivera has traveled to numerous countries, conducting outreach projects and founding local businesses designed to finance continued growth within those local populations.  Tito is in his 3rd year on the Idaho Mediation Association Board; he’s a professional mediator for the Fifth Judicial District Court in Blaine County as well as a member of the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR).  Tito has been a Chaplain with the Blaine County Sheriff Department since 2000.  At the request of local law enforcement, Tito recently completed intense training in Critical Incidents Stress Managements.  He fully enjoys all of these experiences and continues to learn from each group of people and culture he encounters.

 

Chip Rose is recognized nationally and internationally as an innovator and expert in the field of mediation and collaborative conflict resolution.  He is the author of “Mediating Financial Issues: A Theoretical Framework and Practical Applications,” in the 2004 compendium Divorce and Family Mediation: Models, Techniques and Applications by Folberg, Milne and Salem, and for the past 15 years has been writing “The Creative Solution” column in the quarterly Family Section Newsletter of the Association of Conflict Resolution (ACR).  For the past 20 years Chip has provided training in mediation and collaborative practices throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe.

 

Vivian Scott is a Professional Certified Mediator (Washington) and the author of Conflict Resolution at Work For Dummies.  She spent many years in the competitive and often stress-filled world of high tech marketing where she realized resolving conflict within the confines of office politics was paramount to success.  Through creative solutions to common conflicts she was able to bring various entities together, both internally and externally, for the betterment of projects and a productive working environment.  Prior to retiring from Microsoft in 1999 she developed the “America at Work” video series and received the Silver Screen Award from the International Film and Video Festival for outstanding creativity.  She successfully co-created “How-to Guides” and “Seminar in a Box” and earned a rare personal award from the Small Business Administration.  Ms. Scott currently mediates workplace, family, and other disputes.  Her private mediation practice has handled cases ranging from assisting business partners in ending their relationship to creating a new working environment within a law firm to helping families deal with the realities of aging parents.  Ms. Scott is a member of the Washington Mediation Association and was nominated for its 2010 Mediator of the Year Award for her outreach efforts.

 

Gary Schreiner is Director of Family Court Services in the Sixth Judicial District.  An attorney and certified professional mediator, he has worked with children’s issues in family law, child protection, domestic violence and civic contexts for fifteen years.  He is listed on the Supreme Court mediator rosters in Idaho and Utah, is on the Idaho Supreme Court parenting coordinator roster, is past chair of the ADR Section of the Idaho State Bar, and has presented mediation training nationally.  Gary brings a varied background in ADR, business, law, anthropology, international relations, music and martial arts to his presentations. 

 

Richard Struthers became interested in mediation after a 40 year career in higher education and at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL).  After retiring from the INL in 1999, he received his CPM status in 2002 and has been mediating agricultural, civil and business cases ever since.  As the founding president of the Grand Teton Mediation Association, he started the mediation program with the Better Business Bureau.  He later helped start a foreclosure mediation program with the Eastern Idaho Community Action Partnership.

 

Michele Unsworth is Director of Family Court Services for the Third Judicial District.  A Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, her background includes over twenty years experience in various capacities as adoption and foster care specialist, school counselor, alternative dispute resolution screener, clinician and community education coordinator for victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse.  Michele has been an Idaho Supreme Court approved child custody mediator since 1999 and is committed to assisting families in finding peaceful ways to settle their disputes.
